Cecily Aguilar, woman accused of Special Forces murder in 2020. Vanessa Guillen was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.
Aguilar pleaded guilty to one conspiracy and three counts of perjury last year. Aguilar’s boyfriend at the time, Spc. Aaron Robinson is accused of killing and dismembering Gillan, then recruits Aguilar to help dispose of his body near Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), Texas.
Robinson killed himself when authorities rallied over him in 2020, making Aguilar the only person charged with Gillan’s death.
US Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Jaime Esparza, said at a news conference on Monday: “We hope that today’s sentence brings comfort and justice, the Vanessa Guillen family is indefensible and will now face the most severe punishment for the choices they have made.

At the press conference after Aguilar’s conviction, Vanessa’s sister Meera Guillen said, “This is a very difficult day for my family. “There’s a heart now because Cecily has finally taken responsibility for her actions,” she said, “I’m happy to say we can close this chapter and move on.

States that Aguilar “modified and concealed evidence.” reports that Robinson destroyed information on his Google account and gave “false information” to federal investigators four times. Prosecutors said he received a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for involvement in the crime.
Guillen is a 20-year old Freshman who went missing when he died in April 2020. His body was found in the shallows after his family, investigators and volunteers searched the area around Fort Cavazos for weeks. On June 30 ,it was revealed that Robinson had killed Gillen in the army with a hammer.
Robinson then placed Gillen’s body in a box and drove it into the Lyon River, about 20 miles from the base, according to court documents. She later chose Aguila to go to work, and the two returned, allegedly dismembering Gillen and attempting to cremate her body before burying it in three different places, according to court documents.
Mayra Guillen said at a news conference Monday that she “surprised me” by confronting Aguilar’s family and asking for forgiveness. “I never understood why it took him so long to open his mouth, and you can’t tell me his behavior has changed from one morning to the next, and the apology is hard to see from the heart,” he said.
Gillen’s story sparked a new wave of politics in the Army and the military as a whole.
After her disappearance, the women flooded social media with their stories of sexism and military abuse, using the hashtag #IAmVanessaGuillen.
In 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Ben Vanessa Guillen Act, which would criminalize sexual assault and harassment outside of the military. This bill also criminalizes sexual assault under the Military Uniform Code of Ethics.
