ALEXANDER ZVEREV VS SINNER
Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open after holding off a resurgent Jannik Sinner on a brutally wet Sunday evening in New York.
Zverev kept his cool in the deciding set at Arthur Ashe Stadium, sealing a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win and a quarterfinal showdown with top seed Carlos Alcaraz.
The German was pushed all the way by Sinner, who struggled physically in the second and third sets but came back into contention with a valiant performance in the fourth set.
Sinner began to suffer from cramps in both legs during the second set, and halfway through the third set his condition worsened enough that Zverev approached him to check on his well-being.
The Italian’s form improved enough in the fourth and fifth sets to ensure a pulsating climax for the crowd on Sunday night, but Zverev ran out 14 winners to seven in the final set to seal a hard-fought fourth in four hours and 41 minutes. – round triumph.
