The first celebration of this holiday took place in 1792, when the Columbian Order in New York, Tammany Hall, held an event to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the historic landing. Although it was celebrated unofficially during this time period, it did not become a federal, official holiday until 1937 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
